2. Schism of Jerusalem

Immediately after the proclamation and the official recognition of the Jewish State by the United States of America as the first country in the UN assembly, the armies of the Arab states marched in Palestine and the fledgling state of Israel was forced to defend itself against enemy troops on several fronts.[IX] For days on end the war raged on in the heart of Jerusalem, until, after twelve days of heavy fighting, the Jewish defenders of the city were forced to surrender to the Arab legion. So, the old walled-in city of Jerusalem fell into Arab hands and a long period of fighting alternated with truces followed. The ultimate result was a divided city: the western sector was assigned to Israel and east Jerusalem was brought under Arab administration.
